Abstract:

It has been shown that the bell vibrations of brass wind instruments can significantly affect the sound produced by the instrument, and over the past decade several theories have been proposed in attempts to explain how this is possible. All of the proposed theories can explain many of the observed effects, however, two aspects have been difficult to accurately predict: the broad-band response and the frequency dependence. Recently, Kausel, et al. have proposed a mechanism that may explain how the acoustic field inside the instrument can couple with the wall vibrations. We present the results of experimental investigations and compare them to predictions of this theory. The agreement between the predictions and the experimental results indicates that the proposed coupling mechanism can account for most of the observed phenomena.
