Questionnaire: Satisfaction on the E-flat clarinet

Gangl, Manuel

Proceedings of the Third Vienna Talk on Music Acoustics (2015), p. 70

Abstract:

In a survey, clarinetists with different expertise in clarinet playing (professional players, advanced students, beginning students, sideline musicians) were asked to give grades for their satisfaction on intonation with Eb-clarinets. The participants of all groups (N = 39, male = 27, female = 12) had to judge the intonation in grades between 1 (best) to 5 (worst). The tones (E3–C7) were subdivided into four registers: chalumeau register, the head tone register, the clarion register and the altissimo register. To find out whether there is a significant difference of how the participants evaluated the intonation in different registers a Two-Way ANOVA statistical test was chosen. The Two-Way ANOVA test on grades by register condition and expertise of the participants showed a significant effect of the register (F(1, 37) = 14.90, p < 0.001) and a significant interaction between the register and the expertise of players (F(1, 37) = 2.96, p < 0.05). All expertise groups gave the worst grades for the head tone and the altissimo register. Overall, the professional group reported intonation problems only in the altissimo register (mean=2.89).
